Paediatric physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of infants, children, and adolescents with a wide range of physical conditions, injuries, and developmental challenges. The goal of paediatric physiotherapy is to promote optimal physical function, mobility, and independence in young patients. At Sutherland Shire Paediatric Physiotherapy, we know that's it's not only the anatomy, but also the approach, that makes children's physio a special skill. So, we're all about making kids and their families feel like therapy is fun and fruitful!
If your baby has delayed motor development, it means that they are not reaching typical physical and movement milestones for their age. Whilst it's scary to think your baby isn't on par with its peers, it's not always a cause for concern. We know of a case where a 3 year old child preferred to play with their toes than walk and went on to become a park run fiend!
Development occurs in a predictable sequence, but the exact timeline can vary from one child to another. Here are some common motor milestones and the general age range at which they are typically achieved:
Gross Motor Skills:
Fine Motor Skills:
If your baby is not meeting these milestones within a reasonable range of time, it may be considered delayed motor development. Early intervention and support can be beneficial in addressing any underlying issues and helping your baby achieve their developmental milestones. Depending on the cause and severity of the delay, various therapies and interventions may be recommended to support your child's motor development. If you're concerned about your babies development, feel free to book an assessment with our paediatric physiotherapists. You don't need a referral, and they can help you understand if and when to intervene.
Good question! The amount of physiotherapy a child needs depends on their individual condition, age, and the goals of the treatment. If you have concerns about how much physiotherapy your child needs to meet their goals then, book an appointment with Sutherland Shire Paediatric Physiotherapy to see what they recommend.
The utilisation of NDIS can vary widely based on factors such as the number of people with disabilities, the prevalence of various disabilities, the level of awareness and accessibility of the scheme, and the overall funding available for NDIS clients. If you have funding in your child's plan that you are not sure if you will be able to utilise and would like to look at putting the funding to best use, then Sutherland Shire Paediatric Physiotherapy are able to conduct an assessment to see if they can provide treatment options to help your child achieve their NDIS goals.
Research shows that babies born prematurely are at increased risk of delays and developmental disabilities. Especially if you are noticing that they are not meeting their age appropriate milestones, you have noticed a difference in how they are using each side of their body, or if the legs and arms feel stiff, then it is recommended that you have an assessment by a paediatric physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will then conduct a thorough assessment and let you know if they feel your child would benefit from treatment to address your concerns.
Paediatric physiotherapy can be beneficial at any age, from newborns through to adolescence. Whether your child has developmental delays, motor challenges, or specific conditions, early intervention is often recommended to achieve the best outcomes.
The frequency of physiotherapy sessions will depend on your child's condition, specific goals, and progress. Our physiotherapists will work with you to create a customised treatment schedule that best suits your child's needs.
The frequency of physiotherapy sessions and interventions is one of the biggest factors of a child being able to meet their goals.
No, we have equipment that we will bring with us as well as utilising what you have in your home. At Sutherland Shire Paediatric Physiotherapy our years of experience have shown us that fancy equipment is not necessary in most cases. What your child needs to improve their function and skills is to practice skills that are meaningful for them. For example, if your child is falling behind the other kids in their soccer team then we need to work on specific treatments that will improve their kicking, dribbling, running speed and ability to change direction. All that is required is a few cones and a soccer ball!
If your child has a disability they are likely to require complex equipment or assistive technology. Your physiotherapist will work with you and your child to identify what is required and prescribe this specialised and personalised equipment on a case by case basis.
